When a dead body is found draped over a signpost that marks the border between Ontario and Quebec, two cops are paired up to solve the crime: a French cop from Quebec and an English cop from Ontario. Quebecois actor, Patrick Huard, plays the grungy, authority-snubbing, chain-smoking French cop and Colm Feore plays the tight assed, by-the-book English cop. “Bon Cop, Bad Cop” is a Canadian version of the “oddly paired cop” genre (a la Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys, etc), and the movie is full of jokes about the differences between French and English speaking Canada.
This movie is bi-lingual, kids; the characters go back and forth between French and English throughout the film - so, if you’re American, you may want to bring your lawyer’s number to the theatre, since you might get whiplash reading the subtitles. Also, if your not Canadian, there are a few language and culture related jokes that you probably won’t get. Canadians never tire of these jokes so, if you happen to catch this movie in the theatre, you’ll be able to spot the Canadians in the crowd, as they’ll be the ones performing the heimlich on each other, cause they’re busting a gut watching the French cop trying to pronounce the “H” sound. (Lol)
But who am I kidding? Outside Canada, there’s no chance this will play in an actual theatre. Unless it’s one of those smaller theatres. The kind where the ticket girl wears a Guatemalan weave and the theatre reeks of patchuli oil and bulgar wheat. I won’t step into one of those theatres without wearing a full body condom and a gas mask, so it’s a lucky thing I’m Canadian and was able to catch this movie in the “cup holder” theatre.
“Bon Cop, Bad Cop” has sympathetic, likeable characters and is very entertaining and comical.
