Invincible - 2 minute movie review

Director: Ericson Core
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Greg Kinnear, Elizabeth Banks
Year: 2006
Reviewer: Reese Witherfork

Set in 1975, this movie is based on the true story of Vincent Papale, the 30 year old part-time bartender who attended an open try out for the Philadelphia Eagles and landed himself a spot on the team. In the first act of this movie, Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg, is not exactly living the American dream. He lives in a crappy neighbourhood in Philadelphia, he gets laid off from his part-time substitute teaching job, and his wife splits, taking all the furniture and leaving only a note that reads: “You’ll never go anywhere, you’ll never make any money, and you’ll never be anybody.”

Papale carries this note around with him and, through a combination of hard work, talent, and luck, ends up as a player on his favourite football team.

These triumphant stories about underdogs rising up and becoming sucessful are always popular. You know, when I quit my job at the Burger King and told everyone that I was going to pursue my dreams, they all laughed. But the laugh’s on them, because over at Dairy Queen we get a 10% staff discount and 2 twenty minute breaks. You guys just let me know if you need an ice cream cake for a party or something. I can get you the large for the price of the small. I’m not kidding. Our manager is THAT cool.

Back to the film - despite the fact that this movie is basically a football version of “Rocky,” I still highly recommend it. Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear (who plays the coach, by the way) are very likeable actors and the characters they play are highly compelling. This movie is very well done. It’s not cheesy, smaltzy, sucky or barfy, and is actually one of the better films I’ve seen this year.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop - 2 minute movie review

Director: Eric Canuel
Starring: Colm Feore, Patrick Huard
Year: 2006
Reviewer: Reese Witherfork

When a dead body is found draped over a signpost that marks the border between Ontario and Quebec, two cops are paired up to solve the crime: a French cop from Quebec and an English cop from Ontario. Quebecois actor, Patrick Huard, plays the grungy, authority-snubbing, chain-smoking French cop and Colm Feore plays the tight assed, by-the-book English cop. “Bon Cop, Bad Cop” is a Canadian version of the “oddly paired cop” genre (a la Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys, etc), and the movie is full of jokes about the differences between French and English speaking Canada.

This movie is bi-lingual, kids; the characters go back and forth between French and English throughout the film - so, if you’re American, you may want to bring your lawyer’s number to the theatre, since you might get whiplash reading the subtitles. Also, if your not Canadian, there are a few language and culture related jokes that you probably won’t get. Canadians never tire of these jokes so, if you happen to catch this movie in the theatre, you’ll be able to spot the Canadians in the crowd, as they’ll be the ones performing the heimlich on each other, cause they’re busting a gut watching the French cop trying to pronounce the “H” sound. (Lol)

But who am I kidding? Outside Canada, there’s no chance this will play in an actual theatre. Unless it’s one of those smaller theatres. The kind where the ticket girl wears a Guatemalan weave and the theatre reeks of patchuli oil and bulgar wheat. I won’t step into one of those theatres without wearing a full body condom and a gas mask, so it’s a lucky thing I’m Canadian and was able to catch this movie in the “cup holder” theatre.

“Bon Cop, Bad Cop” has sympathetic, likeable characters and is very entertaining and comical.
